3.2.1. General information

The transmission will transform the torque transferred from the engine in size and the direction. It is necessary for ensuring optimum speed and passability of the car, high profitability of operation of the engine and the movement of the car with a backing. Besides, the transmission separates the engine and transmission during a stop and the parking of the car, and also at its movement on inertia with the working engine.
All models with mechanical transmission are equipped with the 5-staged transmission united in one knot with differential and the main transfer. The torque from the engine is transmitted through the transmission and the main transfer on differential which, in turn, distributes it between power shafts.
The five-step mechanical transmission is equipped with the mechanism of synchronization of all transfers.
The engine 2AZ-FE is equipped with the mechanical transmission in the block with the main E354 broadcast. A basic design and operation of the manual transmission in the block with the main E352 broadcast same, as well as on the Previa/Tarago models. However the transfer relations were changed for reduction in compliance with characteristics of the car.

Synchronizers with a threefold cone are used in the mechanism of switching of the 1st and 2nd transfers for increase in load ability of the synchronizer. It allows to reduce effort when switching and provides smooth switching. The two-conical mechanism of the synchronizer is used in the mechanism of inclusion of transfer of a backing for switching mitigation.
