5.1.1. The power absorbing mechanism

The power absorbing mechanism (fig. 5.2) generally consists of the lower arm, the power absorbing plate, a detachable arm, a deformable main shaft and a deformable intermediate shaft.
When the blow is transferred to a steering wheel at head-on collision (secondary collision), the lower arm and a remote element of an arm, and also the detachable arm and a lock bolt of the lever of adjustment of an inclination of a column separate, forcing a steering column to move forward.
At the same time, the power absorbing plate of the lower arm is deformed by a remote element of an arm and helps to absorb energy of blow of secondary collision. Besides, the size of movement of all steering column is absorbed by compression of the main thing and intermediate shaft.
